When you think of Sentosa, you will probably think of the clear beaches and sipping a cocktail at one of the many beach bars. Wonder what’s next? Time to explore the history of Fort Siloso. Calling out to all history enthusiasts – The world’s first outdoor 5G-enabled Extended Reality (XR) experience will soon be tested at Fort Siloso Sentosa.
The Battle of Fort Siloso: A 5G-enabled XR Experience Proof-of-Concept (POC), jointly developed by the Singapore Tourism Board (STB), Sentosa Development Corporation (SDC) and Government Technology Agency (GovTech) will draw guests into a fictional World War Two battle at the historic fort through captivating story-telling, virtual imagery and gamification. Harnessing the combined capabilities of XR technology and 5G on Sentosa, guests can experience immersive audio and visuals amidst simulated war-time commands, as well as participate in the defence of the fort through gaming.
This is part of the 5G@Sentosa testbed – a public private sector collaboration led by the GovTech, SDC, and Singtel. The testbed, which runs until mid August, aims to catalyse the public sector’s adoption of 5G connectivity ahead of the nationwide 5G 2 rollout in 2025 by enabling agencies to trial cases to improve operational effectiveness and deliver citizen centric services.
Fort Siloso is Singapore’s only well-preserved coastal fort that served as part of the country’s defences. The on-site military museum contains a treasure trove of WWII memorabilia, including coastal guns, the remains of fortified military structures and tunnels, as well as an interactive video documentary, complete with wax figures of Japanese & British soldiers at the Surrender Chambers. There’s so much to discover in Fort Siloso, Sentosa beyond the island life.
